Obituary for VICTORIA H. KURAK

VICTORIA H. KURAK passed peacefully into Eternal Life at her home on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at the age of 84. Victoria was a longtime resident of Yonkers and was born in NYC to Elizabeth and Michael Rehak. Devoted mother of Michael (Grace), Emil Jr, Mary (Christopher) Merenda, and Victoria. Loving grandmother (Baba) of Sarah and Meagan Merenda. She is also survived by her sister, Evelyn (Sam) Pittaro and nieces and nephews. Vicky was predeceased by her husband Emil, Sr. in January 2002, as well as her sisters, Anna, Marie, Pauline, and Stephanie, and her brother, John.

Vicky was a parishioner of St. John Nepomucene Roman Catholic Church in NYC; after her marriage to Emil, she joined her beloved Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Yonkers. Vicky was a faith-filled Catholic woman with a true devotion to our Blessed Mother, Mary ; she was also a lifelong member of the Slovak Catholic Sokol Organization.

For many years, prior to her declining health, Vicky was an avid lap swimmer and pool exerciser with her Senior group at the Yonkers Ave pool. She could be seen walking the streets of Yonkers(with Dunkin Donuts cup in hand) to daily Chapel Mass at St. Felix Friary and then continuing up Walnut Street to the pool. Vicky was a well-known participant as a singer and dancer in the annual Senior shows, which she thoroughly enjoyed and where she developed many lasting friendships. Vicky enjoyed traveling with her Senior group, whether it was a day trip to the NJ Playhouse, weekend trips to New England, or trips to Branson, MO, Hawaii, and other places.

Most Holy Trinity was a very special place for Vicky. There are many memories of Church and school activities- from the penny socials, bazaars and card parties, to the May Crownings and Holy Thursday processions. The friendships formed with many of the families at MHT over decades ago, still exist and are cherished; they have survived the closing of our church. Mom felt blessed to have all these friends in her life, and to be able to practice her faith with them. Vicky was an ardent supporter of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and their mission. She was a humble woman, always putting others first; she had an unshakeable trust in God and saw the beauty and awesomeness in all of His creations.
